“Why children’s rights?”

 

We as learners from Hoërskool Uitsig, being from diverse cultural backgrounds, each have different ways in which we view children’s rights. Yet, through all the differing opinions, we find common ground and are able to discover a common thread in our views. To us children’s rights:

 

Means that where there are rights, there are responsibilities. To be able to enjoy the protection of children’s right, we have to understand that to have these rights is an absolute privilege, as there are children in other parts of the world who do not have these rights. Children for whom the concept of rights made explicitly for them is alien. We believe that children’s rights give to us the freedom to safely express our beliefs and to live our best lives. For us to live to our utmost potential, education is afforded to us through these rights. Children’s rights allow every minor to better themselves.

 

And the upholding of them is not the responsibility only of children. Adults and care givers must play an active role in ensuring that under-18’s are protected under these rights, that all the minor’s rights are, as if on a list “ticked off” to be sure of the fact that they are taken care. We also understand that children’s rights are there for the protection, support and building up of children and their futures, they are not to be taken advantage of or enjoyed by adult. Fully grown persons who exploit of or enjoy these rights, they are those adults who wish to harm or take advantage of children, be it physically, mentally or spiritually. 

 

Afford children the opportunity to change the world. These rights lay the foundation for kids to improve themselves and, ultimately, society. Children’s rights lay the world at the feet of the youth and allow them to come, to see and to conquer.
